Courses

We have a range of courses to suit all ages and abilities

Yellow 2.0km
Controls (checkpoints) are very easy to find, mostly on paths, ideal for younger children and complete beginners.

Orange 3.0km
Controls are on or near paths with some route choice. Good for progressing juniors and adults who are reasonably confident reading a map.

Green 4.5km
Controls are away from paths giving more navigational challenge. Suitable for those with some experience.

Blue 6.5km
As technically as hard as we can make it; for experienced orienteers.

For all the above courses where you do the controls in a set order, the distances are measured in straight lines between the checkpoints so you will cover a bit longer distance than stated. Course lengths are presently subject to final planning and review

Score
21 controls. Visit as many controls as you can in an hour in any order. 7 easy controls numbered in the 50's, 7 moderate difficulty numbered in the 60's and 7 more difficult numbered in the 70's.

Event Information
Event centre
We are using the main car park for the Country Park, Brewers Road, Shorne. There is easy access from the A2 with brown signs for Shorne Woods Country Park.

Follow the directional arrows to the far (north east) corner of the car park which is the closest to our Event Centre. Look for the tall dark blue DFOK sail banner.

From the banner, please follow the red and white taped route from the parking area to the blue tent which is our Event Centre.

There are toilets and refreshments at the Visitor Centre adjacent to the car park. You will need to buy a parking ticket; automatic numbers plate recognition is in use. The cost is £4.30 and the ticket is valid all day.

There is a children's playground near to the Event Centre
Newcomers and Beginners
If you are new to orienteering and would like some information as to what you will be doing there are two helpful youtube introductory videos which you can watch.

We also provide guidance to get you started at the event. Come to the Event Centre and ask any one of our team.
The woods
The woods are mainly deciduous forest with some great views.
Starts
The start is approximately 200m from the Event Centre.

Only one individual or group will start at each minute interval on any course. We expect to be able to start everyone as soon as they are ready to go. Just come to the start and you will be allocated a place at the next available start time for your course.
Electronic punching
Electronic punching will be used and the controls will be activated for contactless punching for anyone with a contactless SI dibber.

Hired dibbers will be in individual envelopes for collection at Enquiries.

Everyone must punch at the start and finish as these are not set up for contactless recording.
Control descriptions
Control descriptions are printed on the map. For those who prefer to also have loose control descriptions to save opening and refolding the map, these will be available at the start for the Green, Blue and Score courses.
Finish and Download
The start is approximately 200m from the Event Centre.

After finishing, please proceed directly to Download. Your splits print out will be handed to you. Hired SI dibbers should then be deposited in a pink container nearby.
Results will not be on display at the event but we expect to be providing a QR code link to live results on your map. They will also be on the DFOK website www.dfok.co.uk after the event.
